Safety monitored at Southbridge Schools (In English y En Español)

Today, at approximately 6 a.m., a call came into a veterans’ crisis hotline which operates out of Westboro, MA. The caller identified himself only as “Roger” and stated that he was a teacher who planned to bring a gun to school today to harm himself and others. “Roger” had called from a Skype account using a third-party number, (which means that it was not a major carrier such as Verizon), making it difficult to trace the caller. Because the number had a “774” prefix, it is believed that the number might have a connection to Southbridge. However, the phone call could have been made from anywhere in the country. The caller did not mention Southbridge during the phone call.

Southbridge Police Chief Shane Woodson was made aware of this phone call by the Westboro Police Department. Chief Woodson immediately contacted Southbridge Public Schools superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Villar to report that there would be an increased police presence around schools as a precautionary measure only.

We did not at any time believe the threat to be credible, so the decision was made to continue with the normal school day.

Southbridge Police and Southbridge Public Schools worked together to ensure the safety of staff, students, and the community at large. While we do not believe this represents a credible or immediate threat to safety, we will continue to monitor the situation to prevent any local incident.
