Elementary school parents were invited to an online event to learn more about the new standards based report card. This is a recording of that event to provide you with more information.

hi good evening welcome to this parent information session I'm Kathleen size art director of teaching and learning and I'm going to share with you some information about your child's trimester 1 report card students at Eastford Road School have been using standards-based report cards for several years now you may be familiar with them last year or if you have a student in grades 2 through 5 maybe you remember that most parents remember getting a grade like a b or c that represented a percentage like 95 82 or 70% hopefully you don't remember getting too many  which meant that you were failing if you remember this grading system you might also remember not always feeling like you were real sure how you got that green or what a b or c really mad about you as an individual or your progress as a student tonight we're going to show you an example report card and talk about why we are listing exactly what students need to know and be able to do and how your student is performing as it relates to that scale or standard first I want to remind that our District's website is the best place to find information including this topic so let's go there now so you're going to see the district website when you go here first I want to show you that you can change the language to English or Spanish or any other language tonight the information that we're going to be going over he found here where it says for families and then about standards based report cards I'm going to go over all of this information with you but if you have questions or you want to come back and read more about standards-based report card or the examples later this might be a helpful place to have for you to go for frequently asked questions there's also an example of the report card and a more detailed explanation of the performance rating again we're going to go over all of this information right now so let me just hop back into our presentation here are a few key parts of the report card that you want to pay close attention to instead of letter grades that represent percentages students are going to receive a letter but it's more like a code to reflect well they have mastered a skill this for this Reporting System requires a shift in thinking for both teachers who are you stir the older method and for parents who used to get those babies being but this is the best way for us to share with you more detailed information about how your child is doing you're also going to notice on the bottom their social in approaches to learning are also rated and these ratings will be used in subjects like our music gym and Library the key thing to remember is that we are reporting performance now not you're going to notice that some portions of the report card might be left Blank That's because not all standards are assessed every try you'll see that we have 3 trimesters in column 1 it says he won then T2 and T3 trimester one is going to have the least amount of Raiden stops because it's the beginning of this oh yeah this will build over time that your long journey towards an M4 understanding Mastery to be challenging over the course of the Year students will be Matt will be measured against that spinal end of year goal this mean that in the first or second trimester a student might see marks that indicate they are not yet proficient or at that m straight and some skills this is normal most students will not meet all of the year's goals in the first or even second trimester we assure you he progressing toward the standard it's completely acceptable throughout the year remember meets the standard is the end-of-year goal how to just decide what rating of student receive teachers used guidance documents to monitor student progress the guidance document lists the standard expectations regarding student progress and a variety of assessment used to measure student performance so let's take a look here's an example of a guidance document the First Column is the number as it coincides coincide with the Massachusetts state Frameworks and then the second column provide you with the language of the standard itself next in column 3 is the grading. the teachers use along the way in the last column is the column that list the evidence used to assign a performance rating and this side is a really good example to show you or hopefully help you think about how we are not talking about a be as 80% or above or that and a would represent 90 to 100% in this example here this is a fifth grade sample space star reading assessment that we use the teachers have these guidance documents that let them know for each trimester if a student scores a certain on word per minute for example then this would be the rating that they receive we're not just using 1 assessment either we're using multiple measures so one one example would be love that dibels reading test where we're measuring child your child oral reading reading fluency but the numbers that you see on the screen don't correlate any kind of process that relates to an older kind of reporting format that you'd be familiar with the past the thing that I want parents to remember is that teachers now have common assessments that help us to identify where they rate as it relates to the standard so it's a much more comprehensive and detailed way of reporting your student performance now that you have seen what report cards will look like I'd like to remind you of some important reasons why we use this system for for reporting your students progress we're comparing the performance of your student to The Standard not other kids it measures achievement related to The Standard that's clearly defined you remember the example of the report card the language explains what it is that students need to know and be able to do so that when we talked about the student performance we're building a Common Language it also provides multiple ways for students to show Mastery or show what they know lastly and most important because our kids are more than a score before we wrap up I would like to remind you that the Parent-Teacher conferences are come in the next few weeks this will be a great opportunity for questions to be asked an answer I encourage you to attend the upcoming parent-teacher conferences for each of the school as you can see Eastford Road and Charlton Street coming up on November 2nd and 3rd and West Street November 4th you'll have an opportunity to come in and meet face-to-face with your parents and your teachers and get to know them and about how your students are doing in school I'd also like to remind you and also another plug for the district website would be that you can find your students report card in the Aspen portal that smoke on the district website as well progress reports are parent teacher conferences will be next in the next few weeks giving you time to talk to your child's teacher about your their performance that when you do get the report cards are November 19th you'll have a clearer understanding of where your child is at this time of the year lastly I also just want to take a moment to tell you how important it is your children attend attendance is very important as you can see from the skills listed on the report cards that we looked at tonight your children are learning so much every day students miss school when they are young struggle with the learning and Meeting those grade-level goals so please be sure that your children come to school everyday and if you are struggling to get your children to school for whatever reason don't hesitate to reach out to the school main office there are plenty of people who can assist you in many ways I'd like to thank you for joining and watching this presentation don't forget
